The Potency of the Light
Inspired by ‘The Weighing’ by Jane Hirshfield
Moments of joy -
Constellations splattered on a black canvas
How can such a minuscule swath of reality
redefine the whole?
The stars don’t complain about how much space is being occupied by darkness
They do what they were born to do
Without disclaimers
If the darkness would give me more room to do my thing, then I would really shine!
What does stardust yearn to weave
In the formation of a human body?
In the face of dizzying darkness
which appears to be an insatiable beast
What wavelengths can be transmitted?
In a manner that says,
I am doing what I was born to do
What if the best defense
is a strong offense
and the potency of the light
generated from a giving place
is powerful enough to tip the scales of the universe
towards all that I know it was born to be
Without blaming the dark
or cursing the tiny platform I’ve been given
in this quaint corner of the cosmos
I have everything I need
to transmit light
and even if it takes a billion years,
it will reach its destination.
